He was a half-elf, a wise man and a friend to many. Adventurers who explored the nearby forests and mountains often brought oddities they found in the old ruins to him, and he spent much time and energy researching them. The rest of his time he spent in his garden, growing herbs, or in his tower, making potions to sell in the village market. But about fifteen years ago, everything changed. One night there were strange lights in the tower, and a peculiar smell filled the air. The wizard's servants all fled the house in the night, driven out by the noxious fumes. Twice they and the town constables tried to enter the house and search for the wizard, but were driven back by bad air and strange noises which filled them with unnatural terror. On several occasions adventurers who came to see the wizard have attempted to enter the house, as well. So long as they did not try to enter the tower, they were able to search in safety, but none who have entered the tower have ever returned to tell what might dwell there now. No sign of the wizard has ever been found, although on certain nights when the moon is dark and the sky is dense with clouds, it is said that a brave person can see flickers of light and hear low, hideous sounds from outside the house.In recent years, as the house remains untenanted and untended, it has begun to fall into ruin. No heir has ever come to claim the wizard's tower, and the mayor of town has recently begun to advertise that anyone who can enter the house and drive the evil spirits from it may claim it for their own.</blockquote>
