An amusing thought

So, I'm working on advancing an aboleth, and as one of its 6th level wizard spells, I decided to give it wall of iron. A strict reading of the spell indicates that it doesn't *have* to be cast on a solid surface, only that it can't occupy the same space as another creature.

Has anyone ever used a tactic like this in an aquatic environment? If so, how did you play it? I'm thinking of upping the DC for a reflex save or allowing a swim check in its place if the situation comes up.

I just had a fun image of PCs being trapped under a 25x20 (CL 20) sheet of iron that's 5 inches thick and sinking into the depths...

Keep reading. "A creature or object brought into being or transported to your location by a conjuration spell cannot appear inside another creature or object, nor can it appear floating in an empty space. It must arrive in an open location on a surface capable of supporting it."

Well, damn. I didn't think to look in the conjuration section of the SRD. Just looking at the spell itself it looked like it was possible.

Of course, there's nothing saying the wall can't be placed on the edge of an underwater cliff then simply knocked over by the aboleth.

For a reverse trick, separating the group by making a wall of ice that floats upward (water can support ice!) could be fun.

Evil! I like!

This could also make a decent escape plan. Cast it below you and rise with it as a free action. Could grant cover, maybe even improved cover, and cost no actions on your part for the move.
