Here's a link to an article that was published in my hometown paper. That's London Ontario, not London England. Sean Twist is a columnist that appears once every couple of weeks, and basically covers a lot of "geek culture" stuff.

Nothing profound, but thought I would share.

Having invested thousands of hours in MMOs going way back, I can say unreservedly I'd trade any one of them for a regular P&P game. The MMOs can be fun, and I've made a lot of virtual friends, but they don't provide the intellectual stimulation or social interaction that RPGs do. They are an enjoyable substitute, but a substitute nonetheless.

Good stuff. I'm one of those 30 something gamers that somehow missed the boat on MMORPGs. I've never played one... Ever. So when I see these comparisons it makes me want to go out and buy one to see what all the fuss is about... but I never actually get off my butt to do it. I'm a lazy gamer, I guess.

I dunno, I have somewhat of an addictive issue when it comes to computer games. And its to open endedness of it all that makes me nervous. I prefer to have a computer game that actually "ends" when you get to the end.

Also, my niece's husband developed a terrible addiction to Everquest...to the point where he needed therapy. (and this is a successful and well-to-do professional guy too)

I realize that most people don't have these kinds of issues, but that's what keeps me away.

God knows, my wife gives me a hard enough time about spending as much time on the computer now, let alone if I ever got into WOW. She's never ever given me any grief about my D&D hobby, and has actually been very supportive of it. But that would come to an end if I started on the computer too.
