An EN World newsletter?

Well, that was fun

I often hear that people don't have the time to check the news every day and keep up with everything, so I was wondering if EN World's news could be presented in an alternative manner. The alternative manner that ocurred to me was a newsletter - nothing fancy, just a monthly compilation of all the news.

I'm not sure what format that would best take, or even if it would be something people would find useful. It would probably be more useful to those who only visit occasionally. Perhaps it could be a monthly compiled PDF, maybe in a printed newsletter that you could order.

No resource content (i.e. we're not tlaking a "gaming magazine" here), and no fancy art or anything. Just a cheaply produced compilation of the news each month. Maybe throw in some coupons or something at the end from PDF publishers.

Dunno. Could be something to read on the train to work or what-have-you.

Is it something people would use?

I come here often, but I still would find a periodic compilation of news quite useful and the best format for me would be something like PDF.

I would personally not be interested in ordering a printed version, but then again maybe I'm not really in the target audience.

Would it be possible to publish an RSS feed based on the same data that is used on the news page? That would let someone with a reader subscribe to it and either read them on the feed or jump to the full story from a summarized RSS entry.

I'd love to see this. I know several people who only get to check the site out a few times per month. Perhaps some of the time involved could be covered by selling adds to publishers?

I almost want to say "I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter." Sadly, given the subject in question, it's not enough of a troll to actually be funny. Though the fact that I'm discussing this with myself may add an element of meta-humor.

That said, an RSS feed of main page announcements and a 1/month newsletter both seem like great ideas.

Assuming you made a RSS feed, if you set up the feed in such a way that adding material to the main page auto-adds it to the feed, startup is the hardest part. Given my frequency of site visits, were I to use either, I'd go for the RSS. But given a longer period between visits RSS could mean missed updates.

As far as the suggestions of others: I'm in the same camp as Niko regarding distribution; while you might want to test out sale and distribution of physical copies, if I got one, it'd be PDF.

As far as being member- or supporter-only, I'd like to see it be a feature for at least all site members, particularly if it focuses solely on 'big developments' and reviews as opposed to more detailed news and mostly is compiling what's already been on the front of the site. However, an ad-supported non-supporter version and ad-free supporter version don't sound like a horrible compromise if it comes down to it. If the 'big picture' one was free and supporters got a more exhaustive list, that' be fine too.

Thanks for the RSS suggestions, folks - but I'd like to point out that we've had one for about 7 years! There's a "Syndication" link at the bottom of each page. :)
