Ancient Traditions: Myths and Superstitions

Does your campaign have weird superstitions that the local population embrace? How have you developed your local mythologies for the campaign milieu? How do these mythologies trace back over time in the campaign? Are there ancient traditions that the local people embrace? How have your players interacted with these? Are there favourite traditions or superstitions that the player characters have embraced or picked up on? I have one player in a campaign that developed a superstition on his own….his character believed that wolves were special, divine creatures, favoured by the gods, and that sometimes, the wolves would talk to him….and give him secret knowledge or advice…The other players wondered if the character was not quite right in the head…or maybe the wolves did talk to him, or whisper things to him in the fog…

All of the races are aware of their origins on the Gateworlds only a few hundred years before. There are stories and old wives tales about the before worlds most of them are just that, stories.

Because of the extreme danger level of the world everything is tested and charted and determined as much as possible.
. While there are certainly superstitions here and there Augury and the like enable them to be tested.

Now there are teachings about reincarnation that are less than factual. Divination has proven reincarnation and an afterlife but no one knows what is required to complete the cycle of rebirth and magic can't answer that question

-A strongly presented, freshly cut lizard tail will prevent kobolds from lying.

-Orc tears can treat blood-related illnesses. (Good luck getting an orc to cry...)

-If you don't make a small sacrifice before climbing Mount Tabaash, you will die and your soul will be doomed to guard the mountain forever.
