He was a green Lieutenant who had just earned his call sign “Cowboy” when the Battle of the Line happened. He volunteered for the suicide mission. It was his first time in any kind of real battle. He was lucky, everyone says that. He had enough skill to survive, but not entirely intact. Watching and hearing his friends and his brothers in arms die while he was unable to do nothing left him broken inside. He bounced around from assignment to assignment. Everywhere he went his superiors saw the same thing, a talented individual who had lost his edge and his will to live. He took risks that were unjustified. He became a danger to himself and others. Before David could hurt anyone he was asked to take an honorary discharge. </p><p></p><p> Left alone with survival guilt he took jobs on any ship he could. His technical skills and piloting skills keep the jobs coming. He fell into alcoholism to keep the pain and memories away. He went from job to job, drinking away anything he made for many years. It ended when he was alone on the bridge of a small transport. He was watching the graveyard shift half drunk when an unknown spacecraft came into view. It did not register on any sensors and it was gone before he thought of trying to record it. But it quickly sobered him up. It was unlike anything he had ever seen or heard about. It was easily ten times the size of his transport but maneuvered better then any fighter. It was a mix of colors that changes in hypnotically beautiful patterns. He only saw it for but a few seconds, but it becomes the second most important part of life after the battle of the line. He quit drinking cold turkey. He was on a mission to figure out what he had seen. </p><p></p><p>That was a few years back. David still takes the odd jobs, but is very interested in ones that take him to the less traveled areas of space when he can. He still has nightmares about the line, but he is slowly dealing with them. He is well traveled having been to Babylon % before on business and as well as looking for work.
