Animal Companions are magical beasts?

Why does the Races of Stone state on page 102 that "Cloudcatcher" the animal companion is a "magical beast". I thought WotC had revised the text for animal companions?

From what I remember, the revised part was that they ARE Magical Beasts. Maybe this was changed in the 3.5 erratta, but I seem to remember this being one of the big discussions aroudn the time 3.5 was released...

After PHB errata :

"A druid's animal companion is superior to a normal animal of its kind and has special powers, as described below."

That's all what's left of 3.5 PHB p. 36 sidebar first paragraph.
Errata did suppress any reference to magical beast type, and confirms animal companions are "animals".

Wasn't there something like a distinction between "traits" and "something other", that a companion OR familiar gets and doesn't get? *wondering*

I'm glad to see the eratta on this; it always bugged me that my Druid couldn't use Animal Growth and the like on his friend the Dire Lion. Barkskin + Luminous Armor + Greater Magic Fang + Animal Growth = much kicking of evil butt.
