[QUOTE="Jer, post: 7729695, member: 19857"] I don't think they will. Reading between the lines from various news reports, it really does seem like D&D is experiencing a growth phase. And that growth phase is among new gamers who want to play games like the ones they see on YouTube/hear in podcasts. This is kind of unprecedented for D&D as a brand - I think the last time this kind of "untapped market gets tapped" to grow the hobby was when White Wolf brought out Vampire, and I don't think there was a lot of spillover into D&D (or at least not for a while). Right now I suspect they want to ride the media wave and try to keep those new players coming into the fold. Making the game more complicated likely isn't on the agenda at all, since it would increase the barrier to entry for new players. That's where the "core books plus one" suggestion comes from as well - if they cultivate a culture where the expectation is that you can play the game with just the core plus maybe one optional book it keeps things easier to bring new players into the game. And since right now they're making money on the growth, they're going to keep trying to cultivate that. What's interesting is that this could be long term sustainable for the brand, as long as Hasbro is happy with "sustained, long-term profits" and not "short term cash cow". If they can get the right mix of new players coming in while longer-term players inevitably switch out to other games, they can quite likely keep D&D positioned at that entry point for a good long time, making consistent money off of sales of Starter Sets and PHBs. It will make players who want a more complex game unhappy, but we may have stumbled into a point where it is far more profitable to be the entry point for new gamers than to try to make the game all things for all people (at least for now).
