In addition to the other thread about the Arrowsmith setting I would like to present another literary setting for a great d20 Past game: the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Just read the first installment, His Majesty's Dragon. The series takes part in an alternative history at the time of the Napoleonic wars. Lots of nations are traditional breeders of dragons and use them for warfare, with the exception of the Chinese whose dragons are respected citizens. A British naval officer captures a dragon egg from a French frigate und becomes handler of young dragon Temeraire ... Very well written, and a great source for roleplaying inspiration. A d20 Past group could be the crew of a middle weight combat dragon, complete with the Handler (who has bounded with the beast), riflemen, signal officer, midwingmen, harness master ... Cool aerial combat encounters as well; the Battle of Dover (some thirty British dragons against more than forty French ones) is my favourite scene in the book. Cool dragon breeds in the setting: Britain's Regal Coppers, Longwins, Parnassians and so on, France's Grand Chevaliers, Flammes-de-Gloire, Fleurs de la Nuit and others, China's legendary Imperials and Celestials ... It seems that in the second installment, Throne of Jade, Temeraire and his handler go to China to investigate Temeraires origins.
