My original thought was Grim Tales, but a couple of players in this group really prefer DnD, and I'd hate to exclude them. Iron Heroes, though, may be a thought. I have a copy, but none of my players do. Still, it may be close enough to DnD that the two hold outs would give it a go. Hmmm, I hadn't thought about using Modern for just casters. That's a good idea. I also want to limit item creation feats, but I'm not sure how quite yet. Since most items in the world will be historical or legendary, I may just drop them altogether, and use an Earthdawn style system where your item gains power as its legend grows. Non-traditional casters may still work well though. I do like the Warlock, and have never had a chance to use the Tome of Magic classes. My initial thought is that the players are all part of/vassals to a noble family, a la Game of Thrones, serving one of the factions that recently halted hostilities. Their primary goal would be to explore this new continent, which is still largely new to the men who came through the gateway. Internal hostilities and unfriendly natives have kept them from exploring up to this point, but now they must search for answers among the ruins of the people who came before them. For right now I'm going to encourage play as humans. Since the world came to me just a couple days ago, I honestly don't know. I may well make tomorrow's game a one-off and buy myself a couple weeks to flesh it out. Right now I'm not sure if standard fantasy races are even an option, though they probably will be to some extent. Thanks for all your good ideas and thoughts. Since I have like, zero time to prepare for this game, I think I may start off tomorrow with a bunch of pregenerated characters, high level, exploring the ruins only to be killed after the first session or two. Then have the players make their characters sent out to find what happened to the earlier expedition, always knowing that whatever killed the other characters is out there somewhere...
