Any good navigation rules?

Hello everybody!!

I'm planning on starting a new one shot series of adventures based on pirates coasts and I kept wondering: How would I handle navigation in say seas/rivers/etc.?
And then it hit me, there are no rules except for a "Profession:Sailor" in the Core Rules (which only works to make a decent living).
I don't want it to be uberly complicated but I wan't my players battling some storms and struggling to find a treasure island hidden near a coral reef.

Any help/suggestions?

PS: Mods sorry if you feel this is strictly a rules question feel free to move it, I was in the doubt about it myself.

Ther'e the Navigation skill (int based) used in d20 Modern. Maybe that can help you. go to the modern SRD.

Hope that helps

There are several 3rd party sourcebooks that deal with ships and sailing, and naval combat and all that good stuf. I have The Seafarrer's Handbook, which I like. Take a look in the review pages to check out some of the others.

I've used both Seas of Blood and Broadsides for my sea-going campaign. The best mechanics I've seen thus far are the use of the Profession (Navigator) and Profession (Pilot) skills. The first for general navigation (especially out of sight of land) similar to using survival to not get lost I believe and the second for avoiding hazards and sailing up and down the coast safely. Those were my particular favs.
