Tonight the party fended off a pack of necromantic jaguars (shadowguars? shaguars?) trying to get to a VIP who was in the middle of a speech, standing up on a 20-ft. high stage. In 10 rounds of combat we saw at least twenty natural 1s. Most frustrated was the party's knight. A cat tries to get up on the stage, and the knight has readied his action to shove it off. Nat 1. Minion skeleton gets up on stage and tries to run for VIP. Provokes opportunity attack. Nat 1. VIP uses a prophetic ability so the knight can "name an attack power and make the attack roll now; if he uses that power next turn, he auto gets that result, or he can choose a different attack." Gets a nat 1. The knight decides to try something different and uses a ranged attack. Misses anyway. A few other attacks and opportunity attacks, mostly 5 or lower, and only one hits. Another cat gets up on stage, and falls victim to another PC's push effect, but makes its save so it ends up prone at the edge. Knight shifts and tries to 'hammer hands stance' slam the cat off the edge. Nat 1. A few other attacks that actually hit. Knight moves into the middle of two enemies and plans to action point and use 'cleaving stance' twice. Misses and nat 1s. His luck turns and he finally manages to take out one of the cats. The rest of the party mops up. The VIP finishes his speech, warning the crowd of a prophecy and entreating them to evacuate part of the city. Then he thanks the PCs for saving him and has them each come up on stage. Wizard wins some brownie points with the city populace. Druid commends some crowd NPCs who chipped in and makes some loyal friends. Hexblade speaks up in support of a controversial sect. So far, so good. Lots of roleplaying hooks, getting the party involved in the city. Finally the knight walks up and wants to wrap it up in a nice bow by reminding everyone of how much danger they're in. He says, "You see these monsters? We slew them and saved your lives. Now listen to the prophecy and get the hell out of here! Don't make me come down there!" Makes an intimidate check. Rolls a nat 1. The crowd cracks up, assuming he's joking because after all, they saw him whiffing all through the fight. By the next morning he's made the papers, and now half the city thinks the fighter is adorable and self-deprecating.
