It's a matter of taste I guess. Like I said above, Smallville is turning to crap. They're getting rid of the old characters and putting kids in, always a bad sign (must be the CW touch). Pa Kent was bumped off a few years ago, now Ma Kent isn't even around. Then there's that whole teenie soap opera crap going, every time Lana shows up and whines about Clark/Lex/whoever lying to her, I just want to puke. And don't get me started on last season's
fake pregnancy
, where the hell are they getting these horribly contrived plots? At least Lois is usually entertaining when she shows up. And honestly, I never liked the X-Files. I've never been a fan of UFO conspiracies and the like, and that show was loaded down with them. Yes, right now Reaper is following a good deal of formula, but it works for me. As for deeper, well it hasn't really developed a deep season arc like some shows do, but there's a few developments that could add depth to the show. First, there's the aforemention contract burning. That was one of the early episodes, so you might have seen it.
Basically, Sam was still annoyed about his soul being sold and everything, and demanded the devil for a copy of his contrat. The devil then delivers the contract to Sam in an incovenient fashion. Said contract is a foot-thick tome written entirely in Latin, which Sam can't read. His father offers to translate what he can of it, but at the end of that episode, he tears a page out of the contract and burns it. This of course has piqued the curiousity of the fans it seems. However it might not even be important, maybe just something slipped into the episode for atmosphere.
(Spoilers just in case, but this stuff has already been mentioned in the thread.) Then there's Cady.
She's a girl Sam met who may or may not be the devil's daughter. It's been kept unresolved. They like each other, Sam can't find any proof she's the devil's daughter, and the devil even denied it. But weird things happen around her, flowers die, panes of glass shatter for no reason, and so on. The devil told him getting involved with her would be a bad idea. And who trusts the devil anyway? It's intriguing, but I like Sam and Andi as a couple better.
Finally, I don't know how important this is overall or if it's just flavor,
but we keep getting hints that Satan's minions are highly malcontented. They're poorly motivated, surly, and unreliable, and often won't do what he wants just to spite him. Gladys, the DMV demon, has her house loaded down with angel knick knacks, maybe because she regrets her fall from grace. Steve and Tony, who are the guys' neighbors in their new apartment and are also demons, have a special room where they go to bitch about the devil behind his back. Like I said, this might not mean anything at all, but it also could be signs that some serious trouble is brewing for the devil down the road.
I don't think the producers are going for a lot of deep plotlines that requires constant watching to follow, but they have a few hooks in place should they choose to do so.
