Anyone have a Dragon core class?

Good day; had a player try a Draconic PC in my 6th-level capped game. Being capped at level 5 was a very significant penalty. Does anyone know of a core-style class where you build up draconic abilities? The first few levels might help me out (heck, the whole thing would be interesting).

Well, the way I see it you have two options: 1) the Draconomicon, or 2) Dragon Magazine #320 (June 2004).

The Draconomicon has a section or playing Dragons as PCS but w/o Dragon class levels ala Savage Species. Dragon Magazine #320 does allow you to play Dragons as PCs ala Savage Species (racial levels). The mag has racial levels for the Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold and Silver dragons. Pretty much all the 'heroic' types of dragons.

In order to even take classes in any of the core classes, the dragon pc must finish off his progression as a dragon, all 20 levels.

Hope this helps.

Not exactly. The dragon racial classes in Dragon #320 had the requirement that a PC had to complete his current age category before he could take levels in another class. If he decides to take another level in a dragon racial class after completeing an age category, he must complete the next age category before taking other class levels.

For example, a brass dragon achieves the Wyrmling age category at 6th level and the Very Young age category at 10th level. This means that a brass dragon PC must advance to 6th level in the brass dragon racial class before he can gain a level in another class. He may continue taking levels in other classes as long as he does not add another level in the brass dragon racial class. If he does, he must advance to 10th level in the brass dragon racial class before he can gain levels in other classes.

I'm sort of looking for a different take; a core class with a HD and BAB at every level, that grows from "General Adventurer with maybe some scales" to "Scale-clad, Wingèd Clawy Nightmare" over the 20 levels.

Well, dang, FireLance when you are right you are right. I somehow looked over that when I read the article, but it is stated quite clearly in the Dragon PCs and Age Categories sidebar. Thanks for the heads up.
