I know the Binder was a 3.5 class, but the flavor of Pact Magic made it seem like the Binder class was just lazy and used Pact Magic because it was profoundly easy. 1) People seem to be constantly troubled by the fact that a Binder in 4e seems to be able to change roles at the beginning of each day (at the very least). 2) The fluff of 3.5 Pact Magic tells us that drawing a seal and making a Pact is actually incredibly easy - you just have to know how to do it. 3) 4e now has a system of Rituals, of which forming a pact with an entity beyond existence seems to fit right in. Now, many of those working on "the Binder" seem to agree that a ritual is most appropriate for the pact portion of the mechanics. However, what I cannot understand is why people seem to think that only a "Binder" class could ever learn to do it. If anyone trained in Religion can use the Raise Dead ritual what's so incredibly esoteric about the Bind Vestige ritual? My proposal is to forget about the Binder as a class of it's own. Binders are merely individuals that initiate the Bind Vestige ritual. Using the ritual, a member of any class can bind itself with a Vestige. Yes this can completely change their role, but this is less worrisome if anyone can do it rather than simply a single class which can change its role whenever it desires. I have a basic write up of how I see my proposal working. If anyone is interested I'll post it here.
