Message: <blockquote data-quote="The Serge" data-source="post: 2110549" data-attributes="member: 4049">This film was a tremendous let down.  Everything that made the first film a success was present in this film.  We have the return of the mysterious tape; we have the preternaturally intelligent, creepy kid; we have the relatively bright, investigating mom/heroine.  We even have a masculine, but not necessarily love, figure.  And we have Samara again.  All the same.  It's like having the same dinner twice, except who wants to eat vomit?  That's what this film is like.Among the major problems in this film is that it's filled with cliches.  Aside from some great moments towards the beginning of the film and the fantastic climax, the middle portions of the film are a series of huge "seen that done before."  I don't want to give away anything, but suffice to say that there's not much surprising here or original.  Hell, we don't even have the brooding sense of doom with the daily countdowns anymore to maintain a high level of tension.The acting's subpar.  Naomi Watts somehow seems even less of a mother-figure in this go around than she did in the first film (which was intentional).  Considering the transition her character makes in the first film, this is a puzzling move that has nothing to do with the script and more with Watts' performance.  The child actor acts even more creepy when he's not suppose to be, which makes for some jarring interactions.  The only character in the film that seems consistent is Samara... And we see waaaay too much of her, reducing the climactic encounter towards the end of the film.  And the end of the film is a great let down.  What should have been the end would have almost redeemed this mess; instead, the creators cop out even further with a patented "been there already" ending.All in all, this film is a true let down.  What's ashame here is that there's no reason for it aside from sheer blundering incompetence or (more likely) fear of trying something new a second time around.  The only thing about this film worth seeing is the great end and the trailers (particularly Red Eye that stars Cillian "The Scarecrow" Murphy... That trailer, which is supposed to showcase a scary film, made me and the entire packed theater laugh out loud).  D.  At best.</blockquote>
