Like you said, you have to go early to get a good seat and snacks, which means more time sitting on your butt in a theater doing... nothing. Plus, you get more time to listen to folks talk too loudly about their personal lives on the cell phone or with their SO. Kids running around playing before the film starts. Etc.Other folks (such as myself) really, really aren't comfortable in large crowds. I can't explain it, I just really dislike having that many people around me at a time. If I have to work or something, I'll put up with it (on the bus, at the grocery store, and so on).
