[QUOTE="ddougan, post: 1306988, member: 11480"] There's nothing wrong with just playing DnD, but I do think you are missing out on a lot of great games. And D20 conversions of those games don't always capture the original feel, because some games also generate feel from the game mechanics. My girlfriend started with DnD, mostly because she loves fantasy type settings. Spycraft - still D20 - didn't do anything for her. I don't think she'd touch a sci-fi game (though if I can keep her interested in the B5 series - which shouldn't be too hard :) maybe I can get her into a B5 campaign). I love GMing DnD, but every so often its also good to get into a totally different genre - and I don't like D20 for them all (despite the detailed combat rules and feats, the hit point system is far too abstract to my likeing - I'd much rather have individual hit locations and damage like 2300AD or Millenniums End). I have the Traveller T20 edition, but to be honest, I don't think I ever want to play Traveller with T20 rules. (If you are interested in D20 sci-fi, its still a good book to get for the design sequences). Traveller is an excellent game system in its various flavours, though I prefer the early Rebellion era with the GDW House Rules (which probably makes me unique amongst Traveller fans...) Dunno. I guess playing any RPG makes it easier to start playing a different RPG (as opposed to starting from scratch). But you'll always have a special feelings towards your first system :) Having said that, I did find it strange (perhaps cos I've played so many systems I just accepted it) when one of my players - who has never been exposed to anything other than 3rd edition DnD had no conception of how non-hitpoint and non-level based games work. He nearly died when I awarded him 3 experience points at the end of a session of 2300AD ! My favourite all-round game system is the GDW House Rules (used in Traveller New Era - whatever you think of the setting, Dark Conspiracy and Twilight 2000 2nd editions). These have a much higher level of realism than D&D. And the white phosphorous game rules are a laugh :) Also, 2300ADs combat system worked superbly for lethality. And the SK-19 must rank as the coolest looking RPG gun ever :) The Warhammer FRP "Enemy Within" campaign was the best I ever played. It was 5 volumes in a single ongoing story line of truely epic proportions. Unfortunately, all of the above are now out of print, so you'd have to want to chase them up on ebay. (You can get some Twilight 2000 and Traveller reprints - but they are still earlier editions, and whilst its nice to look back at them and lift material from them, I think the later editions are much nicer rules base).
