[QUOTE="Imperialus, post: 2745692, member: 893"] I've long been bothered by the idea of AC... The idea that armour keeps you from being hit always struck me as rather weird. The combat system from A Game of Thrones has created a very elegant armour as DR system that still allows characters to dodge blows. Downside to this is my group would most defiantly not like playing in the Westaros campaign setting . They are still all about killing monsters and taking their stuff, any time I've attempted to steer them in the direction of a more political campaign there are rampant abuses of power, political faux paux's galore, and much tromping on the masses. I have for some time now been developing a campaign world of my own using the AU rules set. I would like to integrate the GoT combat system but it is such a fundamental shift in how the mechanics balance I'm worried about upsetting the boat. In order to compensate for the less damage received GoT characters receive far fewer hit points than their normal D&D counterparts. AU by comparison the PC classes get more HP than normal D&D. I don't think there is a class that gets less than d6 as a matter of fact. There is also the presence of magical healing in AU which is nonexistent in GoT. I want healing spells to retain their value, perhaps I could lower the size of dice rolled when healing? The larger HD does however open up a possibility. I could have each class simply drop down one HD. Akashic become D4, Champions D8, Greenbonds D4, Mageblades D6, Warmains, D10 ect. The downside I see to this is that the low HD characters (especially magisters) tend to have the worst armour proficiencies anyhow and this might weaken them too much. One other problem I see is some of the freaking heavy exotic armours in AU. For example Full Plate in the PHB has an AC of +10 max dex of +1, AU it has +8 max dex +1, GoT it has an armour rating (DR) of 8 with a max dex of +1. Now that would work well if full plate was the best armour you could get in AU but the Definitive Harness blows everything else out of the water with an AC bonus of +12 and a max dex of +3. At a minimum that should give it a DR of 10 which is, lets face it a whole heck of a lot unless you have an ogre trying to bash you over the head with a giant scale greatsword. There is also the problem of magic items. I can't very well make the DR of armour vulnerable to magic weapons or no one will use it past 3rd level. Also what kind of bonus's should a magic suit of +1 plate provide? Should the DR just go up by 1? I'm open to any ideas and I suppose if it turns out to be completely unworkable I can live with the AC system as is... I just think it would be nice to be able to integrate an armour as DR system.
