Arcane Power Excerpt: Cosmic Magic

Cool, now I can play with power cosmic, and be just as badass as silver surfer. (Well at least as cool as he is when he forgets just how powerful he is)

And the other one is storm power,

Well now a striker gets area burst at-wills. And one with an actual control feature attached, unlike Scorching Burst.

I'm hoping Arcane Power will actually give a mechanical reason to play a Wizard, except for "I have cool daily powers and a broken class ability at Epic levels. Also, I have lower HP than ranged strikers for no good reason whatsoever!"

Signed,

Annoyed Player of a Wizard.

I still can't quite get a good handle on the cosmic spell source, that I know is supposed to be drawing from the power descended from celestial objects.

It doesn't seem all that menacing compared to Starlocks who have utterly unspeakable horrors from beyond the stars and the Far Realm. Instead the sorcerer's cosmic spell source some how makes me think of Sailor Moon, and that isn't neat or menacing at all.

Anyways it seems like the thing with this spell source is that it all has to do with timing.

If somebody wants to run Sailor Moon in D&D, I for one am happy they should have the option to do so.

Your comment about timing I would say ties nicely into how I view the fluff of Cosmic Magic. It is all about the ebb and flow of not just the world, but of the whole cosmic universe. Your powers are one with the placement of the stars, the aligning of the planets.

I can see many Cosmic Sorcerers being very proficient astrologers, mapping out (fluff wise) when their powers will peak and fall depending on the changing map of the night sky. So far I would say this is the less "chaotic" of the different Sorcerer spellsources. You could have a almost scientific approach to it.

I definitely don't think this was angling to be menacing like Starlocks. More simply the natural passing and flow of the universe that you are one with.

And I think I understand that, only... it doesn't really seem like the implement I would choose to kill things with. I mean, I understand the concept behind the power source, but I'm not sure I can grasp the flavor of a potential Cosmic-powered character. In combat, at least.

The cosmic phase thing sounds fun, if a bit convoluted. One more thing to keep track of anyway.

Strength as a 2ndary stat, bah! It doesn't make sense except as (yet) another build for dragonborns.

Speaking of which, the one on the picture actually looks dragonish for a change, not like a dreadlocked porpoise.
Now give him a tail and horns or a crest and i'll... er, no i still won't play that, but he's less ridiculous.

I imagine this is something you wouldn't really choose, like how a Wizard chooses to study Arcane arts. I think this is much more of "your fate is tied to this" deal. That doesn't really answer your question, but feel that is important.

As for combat, I would view it as something that depends on your narrative. I could actually be quite pleased if a player made it work that Dailies and such occurred when "the stars align" and other such things. There is more then a few fictional pieces where the idea of cosmological occurrences cause some powerful event/something important to the character.

Edit: Yeah strength seems odd to me too.
