Arcane Power excerpt: Summoning

Very nice. So a minor to make it move somewhere, then a standard to attack, and maybe an OA to have it do and OA. Overall pretty nice, and looks like it could be powerful. If nothing else, you can have it stand somewhere, blocking a square and get a 2:1 deal on a haling surge, meaning it will have double your HS value in hit points and you lose one if it is killed.

It looks like summoning will be very interesting tactically.

also, another big change - did you notice the astral wasp? Does Con bonus damage as its little controller extra?

Up to now, the wizard has two at-wills and *one* other attack power which get a bonus from Wis, and nothing else.

I wonder whether they are going to

a) add Con as a secondary ability to a number of wizard powers
b) add Con and add Dex as a secondary ability to a number of wizard powers
c) neither of the above, and this is just a one-off power to tempt us :)

The Summoner build we saw last month suggested that Constitution be the secondary score. I'm happy about that, because it gives my staff wizard spells with secondary effects.

Con as secondary for a conjurer makes sense given the summoning rules, as the conjured creatures hitpoints are based off your bloodied value and the healing surge cost if they are killed.

I'd love to see more wizard powers that use Con, Dex, or Wis as secondary stats. The only unfortunate part is, PHB didn't do so, which meant most wizards did not start with a high stat for these, and focused on their Int. So retooling a wizard when Arcane Power comes out is not going to be as easy as the options brought in by Martial Power for the martial characters.

But I think it's almost necessary to see more reliance on secondary stats. I definitely want more options for the Eladrin or Tiefling wand wizard. Give me more uses for a good Dexterity. Constitution and Wisdom seem to have their own rewards, but it would be nice to see more wizard powers using these stats too.

Another thing I like about these secondary stat powers is that it will reduce the number of people maxing out one score to get that big 20 to start the game. It's totally personal, but I get bugged when I see a single stat beef-PC with a medium stat and 4 dump stats. It just seems like min-max for the sake of min-max.

Nice, Astral Wasp is a really fun-looking power. It seems that forced movement would trigger that initial Con damage, right?

The flavor text in this preview made me smile, too. The description of Meriele summoning a "black devourer" to aid the paladin is great. Its stuff like this I strive to capture in my descriptions in-game but often fail to achieve. I use this stuff for inspiration, so keep up the great work WotC!

Wow, this is an interesting way to handle summoning.
It is a duplicate of you with 1/2 your HP and your defenses regardless of the creature type (nice scaling).
It has no actions so you have to take actions to get it to do anything. This goes into the 4e action economy.
When destroyed you lose a healing surge or 1/2 your HP.

It seems like a pretty good method to summon monsters. The only thing I don't like is the healing surge part. Why did they tack on this extra cost? Are these powers any more powerful than casting another power? It just seems that summoners will force the party to rest more often. Since most people agree that when healing surges hit 0 the party rests. These guys should hit 0 before anybody else. It seems that they applied an out of combat resting timer-healing system to an in combat effect as some form of resource management. I'll probably house rule that limitation out.
