In the playtest group we had two val'Virdan Sword Sages weilding Greatswords / Flamberges in addition to my dagger specialist. I didn't find either build noticeably better than the other and when we did bump into issues we got them corrected. There are several things that end up balancing this. All weapons follow the same pattern for speed and damage. D4 - Speed: 3 D6 - Speed: 4 D8 - Speed: 5 D10 - Speed: 6 D12 - Speed: 7 Exceptional Quality weapons will lower the speed by 1, minimum 3. If a weapon is already speed 3, it gets +1 to damage instead. There's a rune that will decrease the speed by 1 available at Tier 2, again minimum speed of 3, +1 damage otherwise. Combining weapon tricks and martial techniques add some to the speed (typically 1 or 2 ticks) which decreases the difference between a speed 3 and speed 5 weapon for how often you swing. There are tricks like "Mighty Swing" that do +5 damage. The trick is available for larger weapons, but not for smaller ones. You can think of Armor as DR, 3 or 4 at Tier 1 is probably about normal for opponents which can make an impact as well. Last night when I played I used Gladius (Speed 5) and dagger rather than 2 daggers and it worked fine. The dagger has versatility though. If you're trained in it and have 3 ranks in Melee (Balanced) you can do piercing, slashing or blunt damage with it. We beat on the rules a lot trying to break them which is part of the reason I went dagger and they went two-hander. There's always a chance we missed something but I'd feel comfortable taking either path. Depending on the opponents there will be an edge, but nothing universal that's there now as far as we could tell. With a sweep of his hat, Paul
