SO... a 1st level Wizard/Sorcerer can be running around in combat with AC +8 that protects against Ethereal Creatures, no Maximum Dex, No ASF, No ACP, and be totally immune to Magic Missiles (thanks to Shield). No first level Fighter is going to have an AC that good. The only Armor that does that is Full Plate and even then he is still vulnerable to Touch Attacks and Magic Missile. You can also easily sleep in Mage Armor... try that in medium or heavy armors. Mage Armor still lasts Hours/Level. Once a Mage gets around 8th level there really isn't any reason for him to not have it up and running and to keep a Shield spell on hand in case they get into combat. At High Levels I'd agree that a Magical Mithril Chain Shirt would be nice but I'd still keep the Shield spell handy (sorry guys, Magic Missile is and always will be the most common offensive spell in the game).

[QUOTE="Calico_Jack73, post: 1441672, member: 14403"] Why bother? Mage Armor protects better than Studded Leather and as good as a Chain Shirt. It also works against ethereal creatures too since it protects against touch attacks. Also, most people don't think about it but Mage Armor stacks with the Shield spell in 3.5E since they both provide different Armor bonuses. SO... a 1st level Wizard/Sorcerer can be running around in combat with AC +8 that protects against Ethereal Creatures, no Maximum Dex, No ASF, No ACP, and be totally immune to Magic Missiles (thanks to Shield).
