Heh... another sorcerer thread :) Depends who you ask ;) I can only tell you that IMXP sorcerers are a great class like any other. When I started playing 3ed I preferred Wizards and played a couple. I think I started trying out a sorcerer for two reasons, one of which was because I intuit that metamagic really needed spontaneous casting to work, the other that I wanted to see why everyone thought they were a poor class :) So IMXP they are fine in the average campaign. They can actually be below or above wizards in campaigns with something biased, such as too much combat or too few combat situations (but all classes can be more/less effective depending on lot of environmental variables). Nowadays I even prefer sorcerers over wizards because they suit my playing style more. There is less to plan at character creation but at the same time that lesser planning is more important, and at the same time there are less spells to remember during gaming. Still after a few levels there is enough room for me to make out a very different sorcerer than the previous ones. I indeed use metamagic A LOT! I hardly make a sorcerer without metamagic feats. Some of them are especially useful to "multiply" some spells and be used at higher level, so that you can learn something else (ex. Empower Spell, Heighten Spell, Chain Spell, Energy Substitution...). Anyway with metamagic feats I usually choose them when I already have at least one spell in mind. I know that it's costly, but I don't mind, if you use it then it's going to be worth nonetheless. For example, my first mm feat ever was Extend Spell IIRC (that was actually with a Wizard, but still), and I planned to use it simply with Mage Armor. It is important to note that IMO the metamagic feats in the PHB are not enough. There should be at least a group of ~20 core mm feats.
