D&D 3E/3.5 Are there any 3.5 rules for alternate Paladin Special Mounts?

Any official rules on this? If not, does anyone remember what level would be acceptable for a paladin to ride a Dire Lion?

I believe that the DMG has rules for alternate Paladin mounts (can't quote you a page number since I'm at work). I believe that a paladin could select a dire lion as a mount somewhere between 9th and 12th lv. The Draconomicon covers having a dragon or Dragonell as a special mount.

If I dare assist you, it's page 204 of the DMG.
There are also feats that allow you to acquire more unique mounts, such as Celestial Mount [Exalted] from the BoED, and Dragon Steed [General] from the Draconomicon.

It does indeed, although I managed to miss it for months too!

The 3.5 DMG has a wealth of hidden things that were added when they revised it. The section on special paladin mounts is one of them, same thing with improved familiars. Lots of great stuff.

Though now I can't find the CR/Experience table without looking in the index.

*Grumble* Never find anything, if I'm in need of finding. Find only things I'm not looking for. Why is it this way since 3.5? *reeling in the 3.0 feeling*

In defenders of the faith a paladin could get a dire lion at 8th level. The paladin was treated as 3 levels lower for determining when the mount gets special abilities, extra hit dice, strength boost etc.

The Dragon Issue dedicated to fighting types (309? 311? one of thsoe) has alternate Paladins for different alignments. Almost all of them have a substitute for the Special Mount if you are intersted in companions that aren't mounts.
