The arena style D&D seems to be growing in popularity. Boards are springing up for the sole purpose of PvP matches. Players can create characters of all kinds without worrying about RP. Min/maxers at their best. I, myself, participate in such "sports". But my resources are limited to the books I own. Currently, I only have access to the PHB, DMG, MM(1, not 2), T&B, S&S, and ELH. I play a 15th level Barbarian in one campaign and a 15th level Wizard in the other. I find myself going up against holy archers from hell, druids with "harm"ful spells, and maho-tsukis that will make you weep. Do I even stand a chance in these environments? Both allow characters from a variety of sources. FRCS, OA, and all the various Splat books, Dragon Magazines, and WOTC sources. Do I even stand a hope of a chance against characters created using those books? My 15th level barbarian gets crushed everytime he enters the arena. When he manages to close with the enemy, they either use harm followed by a damaging spell (and with insane concentration bonuses, they can cast defensively all they want without the need to roll), or I get blown away by a repel metal spell. Everyone in this arena are spellcasters or in part spellcasters. Does a 15th level barbarian stand a chance in this case? What good is all those hp when Harm takes them all away? My 15th level Wizard has better luck, but still gets wiped clean by Maho-Tsukis. I don't have the OA book, but these guys are casting spells from the Cleric, Druid, and Wizard lists. (I recently was the victim to a Control Winds spells, cast at hurricane speeds, then he merely appraoched my helpless prone wizard and harmed me to death) With access to all these sources, are my opponents at a huge advantage because I don't? I guess what I'm getting at here is, does somebody like me, someone with access to few sources in the D&D world, stand an ounce of a chance against these big-bag FR guys? Arena fighting is fun to me, but not when I am helpless despite all my efforts of making a good character with what I got. It becomes frustrating when I get slammed against a wall because the druid casts one spell and basicly immobilizes me, no save, for the tenth time. [/Gripe][/rant]
