HIGHMOON MEDIA PRODUCTIONS SEEKS HAND-DRAWN CARTOGRAPHER

We are in need of a cartographer who does hand-drawn work. By this w mean good ole pencil-n-pen work, no digital art, no CC2, etc. If you'd like to see some samples of a cartographer we have worked with in the past, and perfect examples of what we're looking for, see Craig Zipse's website at http://www.craigzipse.com

I have one immediate job for a map of a small medieval English village for an upcoming adventure. There will be more jobs after this one, as we have various adventures in development.

Artist retains copyright of their work, while we purchase specific rights of use.

Payment for maps range from $10 - $25, depending on the complexity. For multiple maps in one project, a bundle fee will be worked out. Further details to be worked out once a candidate has been chosen.

We are very easy to work with, offer lots of artistic freedom after our notes are handed in, and pay on time. References available upon request.

For more information, or links to online galleries, please email us at opencall@highmoonmedia.com with the subject "Maps."

Wow, Craig does some really nice work.

So, why no digital work? There are people that can produce maps of that style and quality using digital methods.

I just really like the look of hand-drawn. Don't get me wrong, I love Photoshoped maps, but for some products it's just not right.

However, if anyone can produce digital art that looks like that, I'll take a look at it for sure. :)

Yep, most people do. :)

Unless told otherwise, I would have guessed that some of Craig Zipse's maps had some postprocessing in Photoshop or a similar program.

If you're talking about the "bevels, beads & bitmaps" style that's gaining in popularity now days... Yeah, I agree. Sometimes those turn out as more of an illustration than a map.

I'm sorry to say my skills aren't up to that kind of challenge yet, but I know of two people that could do this. I'll see if I can point them towards this thread.

I must admit that I do not make use of 100% hand-drawn techniques. I frequently hand-draw a map to the point that all of the basic outlines and occasionally some details are laid out and then I color them on the computer.

I purchased PrismaColor's full pencil set many months ago but have not yet used them. Guess this is an incentive to dust off the box, put them to use, and put some examples on my website.

I do have a hand-drawn dungeon recently posted on the site though.

Paul

I like your work, Paul. I am familiar with your website.

I'm not going to be draconian about this. Using the computer to edit/enhance/color/etc. is fine. What I'm NOT looking for are maps done exclusively in CC2 or those like the tiles done by SKG (and lest I be accused of dissing SKG's tiles, I'm not, I love them myself, they're just not what I want for this product).

I have received a couple of queries, and I'll be replying to them all as I can. These coming weeks will be busy for me because of the Jewish High Holy Days, but as I find some time here and there I will be emailing everyone and asking for more specifics. From what I've seen so far, I have a couple of people who can do the job quite well; now it's a matter of if they can do the job for the (admittedly) low fees I can afford at the moment. :)

An update:

After looking through the various galleries, I have narrowed it down to a few applicants whom I will be contacting later today.

Thanks to all who have replied to the open call. I greatly appreciate it.
