As a DM rather than a game designer, I don't really care that such products wouldn't sell. Frankly, to me it's not much of a product question as opposed to a DMing question. What Mr. Rilstone is talking about is very much what I am trying to do with my Barsoom campaign. Still exciting, still things happening, but the focus is much less on numbers and "geek-bashing", and more on how the characters are responding to the events around them. What's fun is when you take your players at their word, and then have the NPCs react to their actions (or lack thereof) appropriately. Case in point in Barsoom recently: A long-time NPC, a loyal friend of the party's and all-round good guy, goes down beneath the teeth and claws of a bunch of zombies. One of the PCs freaks out and tries to save him, but the others don't express any concern. That same PC says she's going to bury the poor chap and mentions crying at the graveside. It's not a big melodramatic moment or anything, but still. None of the other players say a word. They're too busy planning their next step or whatever. Okay, so next morning, the other NPCs in the party (about a third of the party's actual fighting strength) wake up the one PC who expressed some grief over the lad's death, and tell her they're leaving. They don't want to accompany people who treat their fallen comrades with such disrespect. Stuff like that. Some of my players just don't want to play out sophisticated characters, and that's fine, but their decisions are still going to have a (more or less) sophisticated impact on the world around them. It's more fun for me, frankly. And isn't a big deal, really. I was going somewhere with this but I haven't got there yet and I've sorta lost track... Anyway
