Artist wanted...

Salad Shooter

First Post
Hello. I'm looking for an artist who would be willing to illustrate books for a new fantasy d20 setting. We will be needing mostly black and white pictures, though one or two in color may be needed, for the cover or other pieces. If we accept you to do our illustrations, you will be made a full member of our team, and recieve an even cut of all profits. As there are only 2 other members to the staff, you will recieve 1/3 of all profits (app. 10-20% of every book sold) According to the publisher we will probably launch with, we get paid per book sold. This means that if we sell no books, we don't recieve any pay. Any questions, please email Torchbearerbob@aol.com, with "Dystopia Artist" as subject. While there is not much to be had at the moment, further information on our game setting can be seen at Omniscient Projects Thank you, and have a nice day.

Good luck getting help.

Every once in a while a call like this goes up at the freelance boards over at RPG.net, and the artists over there kinda rail on these type of things. People who want free art. And unless you sell books, that's what you are asking for. My advice, wait a while save some money to pay artists up front - upon recipt of the art - (Doesn't have to be a lot). That way you respect the profession and the artist doesn't have to starve waiting to see if any of your books sell.

I'd also advise going to that forum and read thier guidlines for buisness asking for artists (A sticky at the top of the page). You might also get some work from there, and possably other options than what you are offereing. Something to think about.

Todd,

Thanks for wishing us luck. Actually, you appear to be quite wrong. The past few days have brought well over 20 applicants, many of them quite talented artists. The idea behind our pay method was not to scam an artist into giving us free pictures. Many artists out there WILL draw pictures for free, and we are giving artists who might not necessarily ever do something like this an easy way to do what they love and, possibly, get paid for it. Actually, the artist we chose will be recieving more money than my co-designer or myself, as we are putting up the money for beginning to publish the book, and the profits from the first 200 or so books sold will go to pay for that. Our artist, however, will not have to pay this fee, and will recieve his or her 1/3 of the profit to do whatever s/he wills. So, if we only sell 5 books, the artist will get 10 bucks or so (my numbers might be wrong, Matt handles that, not me) and Matt and myself will be 190 dollars each in the hole. Basically, both designers and the artist will be doing something they like to do, and have a chance to recieve money for it...isn't that the goal of every American?

Thank you for this overwhelming response! However, due to the number of people we've had emailing in regards to our post, we are now no longer accepting applicants. Thank you for your time, and good luck to those who applied.
