At Last!!! (Battlefield Adventures)

Chainmail is still the funnest Medieval mass combat system I've played.

(Why do I have a feeling that's a statement that could haunt me?)

I don't think the statement will haunt you as much as Diaglo will ;)

I have Fields of Blood, but it doesn't allow for tactical, wargaming-style army combat- I want me some of that for my dnd game. But the FoB system is good for what it does, which is provide a quick resolution system for mass combat.

Well, I guess I'll have to look at some reviews and see... I wish there was a good dnd book for running a kingdom, including seasonal, annual and monthly events, mass combat/warfare rules, siege rules, naval rules, etc....

I seem to recall that the Basic et al rules had a system for all of this, but I never had the high level stuff (was on 1e/2e) so I never saw the system. (War Machine or something?) Likewise, since it was tied to a campaign setting, I never got into Birthright. Meh. Coulda mined good stuff out of those. Oh well.

war machine was part of the Companion Rules.

The original Blackmoor (First Fantasy Campaign) published by Judges Guild contains a lot of stuff regarding running the economics of a hold or keep. Don't recall mass combat rules there though. Judges Guild also put out a product called War Cry that I believe had rules for mass combat, though I never played with them. Years ago we used to use rules we modified from some Hyborian Age miniature rules (can't remember the exact title now) for mass combat.

Oh thank god, another mass combat thread--I think there was a 20 minute gap on the front page.

We have been talking about a lot of this stuff (except maybe Chainmail) here:

A few additional points: the unit combat system from Cry Havoc is included in the Advanced Player Manuel. And there is no current system that is really like traditional wargames including 1st ed Battle System or yes Chainmail . What is out there doesn't use minis, isn't trully "mass combat" (minis handbook here), is more abstract (GT) or seems to be focused on a smaller scale (Cry Havoc unit combat)
