Doc had had his saddle reworked by a leatherworker in the Tor, and he sat in a manner that was strange to the other's eyes, but it worked for him - he was able to negotiate steep and rugged terrain better than the others, who were often forced to join Donnell on the ground, walking their horses. Which is not to say that Doc rode much of the trip - many trails were far too treacherous to ride at all. Donnell's horse often led the way, and here-or-there leaped over a crack, rock, or other obstacle leaving Donnell to clamber over or around it, while the horse waited on the other side, shaking its fabulous mane or stomping one foot as if telling Donnell to hurry up. Kahru had not taken a horse - instead he took the shape of a hunting hawk - and he soared over the travellers in circles. Late in the first day, he was able to warn them of a group of approaching Kobolds, who had come out of a small series of caves to investigate. The kobolds did not attack; by the time they reached the group, the Colonel had organized them in a defensive position, and the great stallion reared and flashed his teeth, and the spark zipped over the Colonel's head. It was all more than enough for the kobolds to flee in terror. Kahru flew overhead and watched as they disappeared into their holes in the rocky outcroppings above the old dwarf road. When they made camp for their first night, Gimlak considered Kahru's question. Obmi was a strange name for a dwarf. It sounded vaguely elvish to Gimlak's ears. There were certainly no Dwarf Lords of the Crystalmist Mountains by that name. He contacted his father, who agreed, "Nah, that is no Dwarf name. But I once tried a dwarf named Hobmark - murderous bastard killed his kin for gold. I sent him to exile."
