They are Garden Dwarfs, not Garden Gnomes. They were abducted by the Front de Libération des Nains de Jardin, and nain de jardin means garden dwarf.

Now, now, we all know the difference between "translates literally as" and "means". In my parent's mother tongue, a common colloquial phrase for "shut up" translates literally as "put your mouth in your pocket". That doesn't mean they literally want the person to remove their jaw Daffy Duck style, and stow it away in their cargo pants.
