I was always a fan of the concept of the Spellthief from Complete Adventurer. I always felt that the execution was terrible though; the mishmash of rogue, sorceror and new ideas made for an underpowered and ultimately useless class. I'm now trying to DM my first 4e game (having only DM'd once before) and I found an interesting way to incorperate a warforged spellthief into the plot. Instead of making an entire class for the character, I decided to try to write him up the way I would a monster or NPC. Any and all advice is welcomed! Warforged Spellthief Level 5 Controller Initiative: +3 Senses: Perception +8 HP: 62 Bloodied: 31 AC: 19 Fort: 17 Ref: 18 Will: 19 Speed: 6 STR: 16 CON: 12 DEX:10 INT: 16 WIS: 14 CHA: 10 WARFORGED RESOLVE: Encounter, Healing, Minor Action Gain temporary HP equal to 3 + one-half your level. SPELLTHEFT: At-will, Standard STR vs. AC 1[W]+Int damage. On a successful attack a spellthief is able to copy one at-will spell that his target knows. This spell is used at-will. The spellthief applies its own ability modifiers to the spell. The stolen spell can be used until the spellthief rests or until it drops the spell in favor of another one. Only one such spell can be used at a time. The attack becomes 2[W]+Int at 11th level and 3[W]+Int at 21st. REFLEXIVE MIMICRY: Encounter, Standard A Spellthief can copy one martial attack it is the target of. The spellthief can use the attack once in the encounter during which it is copied. The spellthief applies its own ability scores to the attack. Sustained: the spellthief can continue using the copied attack until it no longer sustains this ability. MIRROR: Daily, Instant On a successful save a Spellthief can chose to completely redirect any spell or prayer it is the target of. The redirected spell/prayer has the same damage and effects that the original spell; that is, the redirected spell uses the original caster's ability scores and special modifiers. GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS: Utility, Special A spellthief can cast one ritual that is has observed or been the target of since the last time it rested. The spellthief uses its own ability scores in the casting. This ability only applies to rituals of the spellthief's level or lower. For the Warforged stats I used and the Warforged Resolve ability look for the PDF about warforged player characters on Wizard's website in issue 364 of Dragon Magazine. Again, if anybody wants to offer advice on balancing the mechanics of this beast I'd be very appreciative.
