[AU] Giants

this latest update reinforces what is going to be so great about AU: a rules set and flavor that are built to mesh from the ground up. come on july [27th]!

One thing I found slightly odd, though it might not be so depending on how the classes in AU look:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Giants with levels only in giant (no actual class levels) are proficient in the use of all simple weapons and light armors and shields.
So, let's say we have a character that's a 2nd level giant, and doesn't have any other classes. He is proficient in all simple weapons. Then he multiclasses to wizard... and suddenly he forgets how to use a mace and a spear?

Then again, if all classes in AU provide proficiency in Simple weapons, this is a non-issue. I just thought the wording was a bit weird.

I think they mean that if you only have levels in Giant, you're proficient in simple weapons etc., and if you multiclass, you gain other proficientcies on top of simple, just like any other class.

Witch Doctor is correct. This is the same as in 3.0/3.5. Should the giant multiclass with magister or wizard, he still has those abilities with his simple weapons. Now, the cool part about being a giant isn't those proficiencies, it's the Reach at level 3!

Amen!

I though would've preferred that the giant gain more strength and other "giantsy" abilities, but I guess that would've meant more giant levels. More giants level means worse giant spellcasters, so I guess it's difficult to balance.

I liked the giants culture and mentality. A bit different, and will surely allow for some good RPing.

Yay!

As a playtester I so love the changes he made.

I specifically requested the Wisdom bonuses, as the giant class now matches the flavor text a lot better. And when it had STR bonuses every level it was huge. A 24 STR (and large!) at the 4th level bump was outrageous.

We also requested the weapon profs, so you could make a 1st level giant.

I thought it would be cool to have a ceremony that switches the giant between his wardance and caretaker modes.

PS

It's one of those Unspoken Cliches....if your race has a warlike aspect, or a guardian aspect, they have to be serious. And if they're big and strong like that, their sense of humor has to be something you'd expect to find in a Viking movie. ;)

I like it in general. I thought a definate wierd thing was that they don't dance, and there's no explanation given. They obviously have rhythm and beats, but no dancing giants? Whyfore?

I think it's because of the noise that they'd make - you wouldn't be able to hear the music with a herd of giants stomping all over the place. :)

ps - I had a mental image of 12' tall swing dancers doing aerials.. pretty funny!
