AV's thread: Reverse-engineer D20 Modern for D&D?

Well, if they want do a conversion guide well done, it can take some 8 pages. I mean, if the convert the rules, give examples and all that, it cannot be done in one page... I hope!

Man, I think I have been realistic here...

8-10 pages more means a lot more of money in a book, specially if you have already reached one of those "standard page number" printers love, so "adding a few pages" to a book ca be finantially a very bad idea (at least it is what a friend of mine, in a Spanish editorial explained me).

So we must choose between 8 pages of "conversion rules" many people won't use or 8 more pages of d20 Modern specific stuff. I prefer the last, YMMV of course.

I am already going to spend $30+ dollars on the book what is a few dollars more? What did the FRCS cost? What did WoT cost? If I am going to shell out the money in the first place...I want it to be complete. Web Enhancements are nice, but if they are not printed into the book, it is a hassle to drag them along. Just like all the errata is a hassle to drag along...

Just my view!

Depends on what gets cut if I want to see it in the main book. I do want to see such a document.

If it means that something really cool gets cut, like an alternate magic system, then I'll buy a mag or do a download to get some VP/WP in DND games.

Do you need to have d20 Modern tell you how to add VP/WP to a D&D game? Assuming you have either Star Wars or the Wheel of Time, it seems you should be able to simply do so without a conversion guideline.

Maybe the conversion between d20 modern and D&D could be the start of a bigger project.

More and more publishers generate a take on the d20 rulesset. Most of these rules are very easily adapted to D&D. But many of them will also change the way the game is played.
If for example the defense-rule from WoT is incorporated into D&D, armor becomes a useless item for many classes. As even good magical light armor only gives +6-+8 to AC no high level-rogue that gets a similar defense bonus without armor will bother wearing it.
Thus, it would be interesting to see a book that takes all these variant rules and examines them for their impact on gameplay and on the style of the game. It should also include ideas to balance the character classes if a variant of the basic rule is used.
This book would allow a DM to tailor the rules of the game to his ideas and to the story he wants to tell.
