Pathfinder 1E Awakened Animals as PCs?

Starfox

Hero
Play an awakened bear anyone? Or a squirrel? Or even a shrubbery?

Is there any good set of rules for using awakened animals or even plants as player characters? I started looking at it but realized it was a big task, so I wonder if someone has already done it?

This would be for use with Pathfinder, but a version for 3E or 3.5 would be interesting as well.

I've been thinking it would be fun to run a game in the world of Barbadango. It has some of my favorite things: gnomes, elemental powers and sapient animals. :)

Rite Publishing In the Company of Henge might not fit the bill, but it's close. These are henge, as in hengeyokai, animal shape-changer humanoids. However, of the shapes is natural animal form, in addition to human form and human/animal hybrid form (the latter is their natural form). They are very cool, but probably not the "animal only" goal you have...

Realized after some reading that what I liked above was the 3.5 version. There is a Pathfinder update: http://paizo.com/products/btpy8d08?...ayer-s-Handbook-for-Fantasy-RolePlaying-Games

Its not that my players have been pressuring me for animal PCs, more for animal (awakened) cohorts and stuff like awakened former animal companions.

I have this book if you have any specific questions. It's very nicely done, but there are some concepts that are kind of hokey, like a Noble Animal Ranger can have a humanoid companion.
