The big picture: After 4e tore down the increasingly complex D&D system, 5e is the version that will take what we've learned through the decades and rebuild the game better than it was before, in a form that is recognizable to everyone who's ever played any form of D&D. Big goals are simplicity and "that D&D feel," and the ability to change your game to fit your style using optional rules. The current packet shows a bit of that, but the most interesting things are upcoming: Cross-posted from a similar thread: Upcoming in the D&D Next rules: Updated exploration rules integrated into core system (so e.g. Green Dragons can make their lairs difficult to navigate). New interaction rules. Subclasses: Large, discrete, choices within each class. Different subclasses can use totally different mechanics (so there can be "simple fighter" and "complex fighter" subclasses). They will be based on flavor archetypes. Feats: Feats will not be part of the core system. Your class will give you a +1 to an ability score of your choice every few levels; as a more advanced option, you can take a feat instead. Skills: Skills will not be part of the core system. An optional skills system will be very similar to 3e and 4e. Backgrounds: Backgrounds will not be packages of skills (because skills are optional). Instead, they will grant areas of knowledge (+10 bonuses to certain INT checks), proficiencies (which say you're able to do a specialized thing; e.g. sailing), and other benefits. Upcoming in D&D: D&D's presence at Gen Con will be Baldur's Gate themed. The first Sundering adventure, Murder in Baldur's Gate, will be released at Gen Con and concurrent in-store events which will also introduce the new Encounters season. Both Gen Con and Game Day will feature "interactive" (multi-table) adventures (Gen Con: Confrontation at Candlekeep; Game Day: Vault of the Dracolich). All of these will use the D&D Next rules (though Murder in Baldur's Gate will apparently be system-neutral, or at least 4e+D&DN). Breaking news: A D&D Next campaign, Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle, will be available at Gen Con. You can pre-order it online, but you must go to Gen Con to get it.
