While normally I agree with the notion that comparing monsters to each other is a moot point, since Demon infighting is classic Dnd a few comparisons couldn't hurt. As both the Balor and Marilith seemed impressively martial, I thought it would be fun to look at what would happen is a Marilith turned against her dark boss and went to town. Now first note, is that the Marilith would have to disable the Balor's flight somehow, or there isn't much fight to be had. So we will assume that due to the Marilith's dark schemings the Balor is earth bound. The Mariliths resistances come heavily into play, it takes half damage from all of the Balor's fire and lightning effects. Further, the Mariliths will use her parry ability on the Balor's sword attack. Neither the Balor's whip or the Marlith's tail secondary abilities come into play, as this is a melee grudge fest! The Balor's DPR: 40.85. That is the sword and whip attack, plus his fire aura. And of course that x3 crit! The Marilith's DPR: 54.4. 7 attacks bring a lot of pain. However, there is another factor. The fire aura deals damage with every hit the Marilith lands, and while resistant, she is not immune. That is another 19.25 DPR for the Balor! If we assume the Marilith goes first (is surprising the balor, or simply because her Dex is higher): The Marilith will get in 4 rounds of combat, dealing 217.6 damage to the Balor before dying. So the Balor lives, but only with ~50 hp left. So the Balor remains the top dog, but with the new bounded accuracy its a lot closer. If the Marilith can find a way to get fire immunity for a brief time, or can enlist just a bit more help, the Balor would be in trouble. It creates an interesting tension, the Balor is the boss...but he still needs underling support to stay in charge. A mutiny with a few lieutenants could hurt the Balor badly.
