Yeah, I thought it might be a little overpowered... Agh. I caught that when I was working on something else (using performances to gain Diplomacy bonuses), but I totally missed it here. You know.. I might just steal an idea from the Neverwinter Nights PW I occasionally play in. They have bardic instruments of varying power; depending on the Perform check when you play them, you can gain increasingly powerful effects. Or, as a more radical idea, I could make each bardic music ability have a DC instead of minimum Perform ranks - your degree of success determines the effect. We keep the minimum levels, but ditch the Perform requirements. So, for example, countersong - it'd be a DC 10 Perform check. If you score up to 10 points over the DC, you get x effect; each 10 points over the DC grants a +2 bonus to caster level checks. Same thing would apply to, say, inspire heroics - DC 30, and make it a +3 base bonus instead of +4, since it's upgradeable. A 55 check would give a +5 bonus to saves and AC. This would change inspire courage slightly - instead of the bonus being based on the bard's level, it would be based on the bard's ability. Same with inspire heroics - each 10 points over the DC would enable him to include another creature. And, we can add in the extend, empower, etc. effects at certain levels for all abilities - say, at check +20, you can extend it; check +40, you can maximize it*; and check +60, you can empower it. *Well, maybe not.. that only works for inspire courage. Anyway, this is all off the top of my head - I just thought of it when I wrote this post, so I'm not totally sure it would work. I'll play around with it a bit. Thanks for the comments.
