Barding

Can anyone tell me if you can get barding for any type of animal? Also do you use the types of armor (chainmail, fullplate etc.) listed for humans in the DMG to decide the AC bonus and the cost? Can this barding be enchanted? If you decide to get a differet animal companion do you need to have the barding refitted for the new animal or get a completely new set of barding?

Yes to all of those except the cost. The cost will differ based on the animals size and shape. The rules for it are right in the players handbook on page 131. What type of animal are you considering??

Without martial weapon prof it hardly sounds that useful. -4 on the spike and then the animal would have to apply the secondary natural weapon rules to the bite, -5 to hit and only half str bonus.

Some creatures combine attacks with natural and manufactured weapons when they make a full attack. When they do so, the manufactured weapon attack is considered the primary attack unless the creature’s description indicates otherwise and any natural weapons the creature also uses are considered secondary natural attacks. These secondary attacks do not interfere with the primary attack as attacking with an off-hand weapon does, but they take the usual -5 penalty (or -2 with the Multiattack feat) for such attacks, even if the natural weapon used is normally the creature’s primary natural weapon.

Barding can in theory be for any animal. Your DM may want you to train an animal to wear it properly, using the Handle Animal skill.
