It's not just California, they just have the worst case of it. This reprint of an article mentions Georgia. Wal-Mart Welfare How taxpayers subsidize the world's largest retailer. by Jenna Wright Here, Politifact notes that, while the politician was using fuzzy math to determine welfare outlays on Wal-Mart employees in Ohio in dollar amounts , they note he was 100% accurate in the raw number of employees Wal-Mart has on Ohio's assorted welfare programs- the most of any in the state. PolitiFact Ohio | Rep. Robert Hagan slams Wal-Mart over workers needing public assistance Here, it is noted that Wal-Mart's labor force is subsidized to the tune of $11M in Washington state's system, and that another $11M in federal aid goes to those same employees. In contrast, they note that Safeway- who employs the same number of Washingtonians- has less than half as many employees on the rolls in that state, for a total state cost of $6M (Federal assistance level not noted). The Seattle Times: Local News: State subsidy to Wal-Mart employees put at $12 million Here, it is noted that while Wal-Mart employees make up less than 2% of Arkansas' workforce, children of Wal-Mart employees make up in excess of 6% of the state's children recieving "Peachcare" assistance- 13x the next biggest company on that list. Arkansas' Real Welfare Queen | | AlterNet This article (and others) cite a Congressional study noting each 200 employee Wal-Mart costs taxpayers: There are other articles from other states... Let me clarify- I have never in all the college & graduate programs I've been a part of 1986-2012 had to wait 3+ months to receive a textbook that was in print from any other retailer except Amazon. Even when the bookstore was forced to contact the publisher due to being out of stock, delivery time was less than one month. Amazon has no excuse here. In addition, one of the ones sent was an older edition- paid for hardcover 2010 (as listed on their website), received softcover 2003. The difference was nearly 100 pages of material. When CS was contacted, they couldn't even tell me if a 2010 was even actually available through Amazon. I think you misunderstand what it means to go bankrupt under Chapter 11- the clause Marvel was under. It just means that, at T point in time, you do not have enough money to pay off your current due debts, and that it is necessary for you to get relief. Usually, it is forced upon you by creditors. IOW, it's not that you're broke, you're just short on liquid assets. The Donald has gone through at least 4 bankruptcies. In Marvel's case, there was an industry-wide slump, coupled with a horribly conceived/executed/timed series of business manuvers that had nothing to do with comics at all. IOW, Perelman used MEG's stock issuance to go on a spending spree on other entertainment companies, just a couple of years before the comic biz as a whole slowed down, leaving MEG with big bills yet to pay for its (his) acquisitons with a reduced income. Bankruptcy was unavoidable.
