In November, the Masters and Minions Horde Books will arrive in stores throughout the world. Is your community safe from Behemoth3? Contact your local retailer and make sure they are prepared to resist the invasion by any means necessary.

OLD MONSTERS POSE AN UNEXPECTED NEW THREAT

Thirty years ago, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson created the original roleplaying game, inventing a legion of new monsters as well as reviving the creatures of ancient myth. Three and a half editions later, millions of players still encounter these classic monsters every month—and many take them for granted. This is what makes the Masters and Minions series so dangerous.

If you think there’s nothing new to learn about the iconic creatures of the world’s most popular RPG, Horde Book 1: A Swarm of Stirges and Horde Book 2: Maze of the Minotaur are going to catch you completely by surprise. Inside, you’ll find not just a fresh take on an old favorite, but also a Horde of new monstrous allies that give it a complex and deadly ecology. It’s time to believe in monsters again.

CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER

Each stage of the Masters and Minions phenomenon, from direct sales to PDFs to the forthcoming invasion of retail stores, has increased the risk to ordinary citizens. The first outbreak, at Gen Con Indy in 2004, contaminated a number of influential figures in the gaming community, including Ken Hite and Jonathan Tweet. Nevertheless, it is easy to protect yourself against the initial means of transmission. Do not visit the Behemoth3 website, where Horde Books are known to be sold. Make sure that representatives of Behemoth3 will not be present at any conventions you might attend. And avoid wearing or carrying items that might identify you as a gamer in Portland, OR, Durham, NC, and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

Danger levels rose sharply when Behemoth3 released the Masters and Minions series as PDF e-books at RPGNow, potentially infecting thousands of customers. Defending against the electronic form of the invasion is more difficult. Check incoming email for suspicious attachments. Do not open PDF documents unless they are from a trusted source that you are certain has not been exposed to a Horde Book in any form.

But the true crisis will come in November, when many stores will no longer be safe to enter. Contact your local retailer now to make sure they are not pre-ordering the Masters and Minions series. Call before visiting any location where games might be sold to verify that they have no Horde Books in stock.
