Alot of interesting point, but I disagree with alot of the essay. 1. TSR had alot going wrong with it, I've never bought into the setting fragmentation argument. 2. I disagree with the Golden Age ending, because it already ended years ago. Look at products like Strixhaven, Spelljammer, and Planescape, not to mention ending the novel line not long after the Sundering series. I don't count the third party stuff because let's be honest, even 4 million dollar Kickstarter is but crumbs from WotC's table, even if better stuff ends up produced. It's all just business now. 3. Because WotC is basically a monopoly with all the 3rd party publishers barely making a dent COMBINED in the market compared to WotC, really doesn't matter what the 3rd party publishers do, including making vastly superior products like Midgard, golden ages hinge on what WotC does, not 3rd party publishers. 4. D&D is in no danger of failing thanks to Paramount and Larian Studios among others (but right now mostly those 2). Also if only 50% of current PHB owners buy the new one, and that's conservative, it'll make a ton of money. 5. This new minor edition change is getting OGL/CC treatment, WotC confirmed that long ago. 6. CR's rating have been failing steadily with Campaign 3, they were highly valuable to 5 much earlier on, but I don't know how many new fans they produce now a days with CR itself in decline. 7. Somethings have improved, the novels are making a come back. A new D&D series is coming. BG3 is likely getting a DLC. We will see what 2024 brings, hopefully not a disaster.
