[QUOTE="Shardstone, post: 9234806, member: 6807784"] The hobby will contract with Critical Role and other stream shows losing steam, beacause streaming overall has lost some steam. Then, it'll regain it when the next D&D social media thing is big, or when their VTT launches as long as it's decent, or when the next movie or game or w/e drops. Furthermore, if WotC really were aggressive about expanding D&D, they could easily jump into new IPs to make their games. Despite many people's assumptions, it's really easy to twist D&D into other genres for settings. An Elden Ring D&D is easy to imagine for me; there are other worlds that could fit well too. On top of that, they have many settings they could explore. We know there are more D&D video games in production and we know that those video games likely get to pick their settings. Even if they do more FR, that's still just going to widen FR's appeal. Furthermore, once WotC resumes it's book line with more contemporary authors, you can expect potential shows and movies to follow suit. In otherwords, D&D will be finally mined for its incredible MEDIA potential, and this will forever move players towards the tabletop game at its core. It doesn't matter if D&D24 is backwards compatible or not (which it is). It doesn't matter if they put out more crunch-heavy books or more vibe-heavy books. So long as the Fantastical ideas inherent in D&D exist, media will be made from it, and the player base will always inevitably rebound to new heights after (briefly) contracting. Frankly, I think it's good that D&D sometimes contracts. I think when this happens, they have to get a little more aggressively experimental with their rules, to find new ways of getting fans to play the game. Not worth complaining about IMO. As for the rest of the hobby, it's literally peanuts. MCDM's personal kickstarter has blown away all of their other projects combined. And even that huge number, 4 million, is a drop in the bucket for WotC. The petty games of indie publishers only impact the views of online hobbyists, not the huge assortment of diverse people who ALSO play the game. And of course there will be more 3rd party stuff for D&D24, even if they force it under the current OGL instead of CCBY. If everyone else gets out of that pool, it leaves more for the rest of us.
