Other point to be remember is the rise of the actual-play shows, and the replay literature. With the improvement of the VTTs we could see horror-theme shows with one-shot adventures and PCs easy and fast to be created. Maybe we could see a Ravenloft actual-play show in the new D&D channel where the players are only survivors, some times the PCs can save the day, and some times some PCs fall in the attempt. If I am not wrong, the actual-play shows shouldn't be more expensive to be produced compared with other titles. Even some streamers could use new tools added to the VTT software to produce machinima videos based in their games, something close like the replay literature (fiction based in played games). Other option to be added to the VTTs is solo-games when a player can enjoy adventures and modules precreated by other players. In the beginning it would be like playing VTT version of Hero Quest (the board game) with some touchs of RPG. The open licence allows 3PPs to create new IPs, and this could survive a longer time as a multimedia franchise. Even if D&D loses part of its current shine, it will be the brighter star in the sky. It will not be easily surpassed by a rival brand. 2024 could be a bad year for TTRPG industry, but also for videogame, paper comics and cinematographic industry. Even in the worst case when if Hasbro went bankrupt the bosses of the investment funds, Black-Rock, Vanguard and company would order this to be acquired by other under their control. The weak point of D&D is this is not ready to be compatible with no-fantasy genres, for example sci-fi or superheroes in the modern age. A Fortnite d20, for example, is possible, but the classes and weapons couldn't be used in the rest of D&D multiverse without breaking the power balance. I say it again. If now there is a new generation who have discovered the TTRPGs and they love this hobby, then these aren't going to disapear suddenly. Maybe thanks these some weird new ideas could arise in a way we can't guess now. D&D can allow itself to be focused into selling crunch. The players who enjoy other systems would rather to focuse in a limited number of systems. And if a system is too focused into the storytelling, then the players will be not too interested into buying more sourcebooks. For example a sourcebook of "Legend of the five Rings" could be a pleasure to read, but if I am going to read the lore or background only once.... why to spend my money? I would rather to spend my money in sourcebooks about crunch because these will be reused and reread more times. * How would be a LEGO: Spelljammer and a LEGO: Witchlight? And a collab Playmobil-Dragonlance? * Maybe Hasbro talks with Epic Games and we could see a collab where VTT Hero Quest is a mode within Fortnite.
