The author makes some valid points, although he loses a lot of points by calling it 6th Edition. Maybe because I'm not involved in the industry as a content creator, I am less concerned about the OGL and don't think that fiasco will have the long-term effects on D&D that others do, given the about face and Creative Commons-ing of the core rules of 5E. Yes, trust has been lost, but while there's always vocal sections of fans who will remain angry and, in doing so, profit off clickbait doom and gloom, there are many who just want to play the game they love. I would be surprised to see smaller content creators move away from D&D if, in fact, there's still money to be made, and those smaller creators could become larger ones in the same way Paizo, Kobold, and MDCM have. And I'd also be surprised if those larger companies didn't also adapt 5E versions of new content for their IPs if there's money to be made by continuing to publish using that ruleset. Lowder's reply about moving more or completely to digital definitely gives me more pause, though, and I find it a more compelling statement than anything the author makes, because he's not wrong, most FLGSs devote little space to RPGs and that space is predominantly D&D. Without that "anchor" brand, will stores make that same effort? As the "gateway game" of the hobby, D&D drives sales of all RPG products and were it to move more and more to digital, as it seems to be, this would be more catastrophic than any fracturing of the player base due to 5E alternatives. Interesting times ahead!
