Best Arcane Spellcasting Book

Hey all, long time lurking between posts for me as of late. Anyway, I was wondering what books you'd recommend for an arcane spellcaster (both for GMing and for being a PC). I was looking over my book collection the other day and realized it really could use a little sprucing up. I was considering quintessential wizard I and II, but I wasn't sure if these would be the best bet. Just please give me the book name, manufacturer name, and why you recommended the book(s) that you suggest. Thanks.

Complete Arcane (WotC), the 3.5 update of Tome & Blood, will be out in November. I'll certainly be getting it but then I'm playing a wizard right now.

That's quite a lot of faith you've got there, Doug. :)

dontpunkme: Take a look at Monte Cook's Complete Book of Eldrich Might. Some very interesting ideas, great for DMs, and lots of stuff -- both crunchy AND fluffy -- to give PCs and NPCs alike.

Also are there any good books on elven high magic, shadow magic, and chaos magic? I'm working on a pretty grandsweeping campaign and I love to keep my options open.

I'll second Nifft's recommendation of the Complete Book of Eldritch Might. Ambient (now EN Publishing) released a book on necromancy -- Gar'Udok's Compleat Librum ov Necromantic Artes or somesuch (neat book, but the title gives me fits when I try to remember it properly -- I think, and I could be wrong, that it's been in print as Necromancer's Legacy). It's good and covers a lot of stuff that'd be useful for necromancers. As for others, there's always Magic of Faerûn, although that might be hard to find. A lot of people don't seem to like it, but my old D&D group used a lot of stuff to it to good effect.

As for elven high magic, chaos magic, and shadow magic, I don't know where I would send you -- I don't think the former's been cover too much in the FR books (it may just be epic level spells under a different name), I'm not sure what you mean by chaos magic, and shadow magic is present in the FR, but doesn't differ too drastically from regular magic so it may not be what you're looking for.
