Best Book/Comic you've read this year

I was pretty impressed with Blankets by Craig Thompson. Very personal and very touching. Huge book (especially for a comic) but I read it all in one sitting.

I thought that Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men was a real hoot.

As far as fantasy stuff goes, my favorites have been the Kane books by Karl Edward Wagner. There are three of them: Bloodstone, Dark Crusade, and Darkness Weaves. Very cool stuff. The character Kane is like a cross between Robert E. Howard's Conan and Conan's arch-nemesis Thoth-Amon.

I know that heaps of people will hate me for it, but Perdido Street Station. I don't remember the last time that a book excited me as much.

The most useful thing I've read all year would be British Culture and the First World War by George Robb. Great overview and introduction that would have saved me a lot of time in terms of further reading if it had been written when I started my thesis.

Tad Williams epic science/fantasy masterpiece, the 4-book wonder called the "Otherland" series. Very entertaining with great characters. A must read!

Hey Olive, Perdido Street Station is the best thing I've read this year too!

For comics, tossup between Blankets and Adrian Tomine's Summer Blonde.
