Lets say you were introducing a new player to a small, established group of experienced players. The new player had never played before, and was curious about how the game works. The established group are all 9th level in the ongoing campaign, so you'd want the new character "roughly" around there. (Aka, not 1st).

What class would you reccomend the new player start with?

Fighter, barbarian and rogue are all fair game.

The new dragon shaman might work quite well and if he just has to play a spellcaster, sorcerer is the way to go.

Depends upon what the player would want. I would probably go with either Fighter or Sorcerer depending upon whether the player wanted to try spellcasting or not.

If the player is really ambitious, they could try Bard and get exposed to a little bit of everything, but the fact that they are not great at any one thing can be frustrating.

Fighter - but as levels keep coming, gotta make those feat choices.
Barbarian - simple enough, and with iconic characters to model the role-play.
Ranger - Iconic models for role-play, and simple enough to deal with the special abilities granted early on. Later the newbie player gets some spells & abilities that will enhance the player's knowledge of how the more spellcasting focused classes operate.

So, ultimately, my first best choice for a new player would be a Ranger or Barbarian based upon the player's tastes. Fighter is always an option as well.

I would ask what they want to do. If they want magic, Sorceror or Favored Soul, choose their spells with them and they should be fine.

Start with "whatever the player wants" ... if they honestly don't have any useful ideas on the subject, I'd say go for barbarian, rogue, or sorcerer, as those are the most straightforward "this is what you get" classes.

Then point them at the "Class Acts" column on the WotC site so they get a primer in what they're doing!

Barbarian. Fighters are more challenging to play, since all those feats require knowing the rules to know what to do with them. Barbs are simple---point, kill.

Sorcerer is also good.

I think the new dragon shaman class would be good for a new player who wants something magical; it's a relatively straightforward class, good survivability, and with some advice on auras and breath weapon they're easy for a newbie to play. Plus it's exotic enough to be interesting (oooh, dragons!).
