[QUOTE="VoiceOfReason?, post: 1927800, member: 27145"] I had a similar encounter years ago in AD&D. The party had stumbled across an abandoned dwarven city that had been sealed off by a cataclysm 1200 years prior, and subsequently infested with troglodytes. Legend had it that the city led to another continent of untold treasures. As a party of 6 lvl 8-12 characters (well equipped, solid group), the random encounters of troglodyte hunting parties and roving umber hulks were nuisances at best. Unfortunately we let the easy random encounters get to our heads and provoked the wrath of an entire colony of trogs on our way through the underground nation. As hundreds of the little lizards swarmed from every dwarven ruin and hole in the wall in a city-sized cavern, we fought and withdrew. We ended up closed in a set of trapped tunnels that the dwarves had obviously intended for defensive purposes. The corridors were short and turned often, doors that were still intact were good strong granite with locks and bars, a few other situational hazards to exploit/watch out for. The main fighting occurred in larger chambers, barracks, gateposts, and checkpoints along the defensive track that allowed the humans and our half-ogre fighter to stand up straight, or in the ventilation shafts at points. Utilizing barricades, murder holes, and every trick we could dig out of our equipment and spell lists and surrounding area in a 5 hour combat session we managed to kill over 900 troglodytes in a bloody battle of attrition. I forget the exact count, but the DM had 8 pages of a full-sized notebook crammed with hp's and other notes for the combat. By the end, we were toting 2 corpses and 1 unconcious wizard, the cleric had gone through nearly all of his spells twice (he asked for divine intervention, promising a large quantity of the party's loot to be put toward missionaries in the new lands we hoped we would discover-and got his nearly emptied spell list replaced partway through the war), and all 3 of the remaining combatants had been reduced to 0 hp on multiple occasions during the fight.
